Pipeline stray-current monitoring: what to review beyond drainage

An intelligent coupler can place drainage, isolation, AC-interference monitoring and data upload in one project discussion.

Pipeline stray-current monitoring: what to review beyond drainage

Why pipelines may need drainage protection

Where pipelines run across or alongside rail-transit or high-voltage infrastructure, AC stray current may create an AC-corrosion risk. A drainage system must release interference current without disrupting cathodic-protection current.

Place drainage and acquisition in one system discussion

An intelligent coupler can combine a drainage module with monitoring, acquisition and transmission. The monitoring relationship may include AC/DC drainage current, interference voltage before and after drainage, protection potential, impedance and temperature.

The equipment, conditions and project requirements should be checked for each application rather than treated as a universal specification.

Conditions to prepare

Provide the relationship between the pipeline and interference source, the existing cathodic-protection system, drainage bed, installation space, power, communication and data items required for upload. The equipment, accessories and construction boundary can then be reviewed.

Key points

  • Drainage and cathodic-protection current need to remain coordinated
  • AC/DC current and interference voltage can be monitored
  • Communication, power and installation must be confirmed by project
