Sacrificial-anode and impressed-current cathodic protection

Both routes use cathodic polarization to control corrosion, but their current source, components and project inputs are different.

How the sacrificial-anode route works

A more negative-potential metal or alloy is connected to the protected structure. The anode is consumed while supplying protective current. Magnesium, aluminum and zinc sacrificial anodes belong to this route, with different media, forms and installation conditions.

What the impressed-current route includes

A potentiostat, auxiliary anode and anode bed supply protective current, while reference electrodes can support potential measurement and control. Deep-well anode describes a system and installation form rather than a material grade.

How to frame the route

Provide the protected asset, protection range, soil or water, medium, coating, power and project stage. The route and product configuration can then be reviewed against the available design information.

Key points

  • Different current sources
  • Different system components
  • Both depend on asset and environment
