The research on corrosion and protection of magnesium alloy is of great significance to the magnesium alloy industry and its application in life.
(1) Inevitability of the development of magnesium alloys At present, the most important limitation of the application of magnesium alloys is its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In history, the rise and decline of magnesium alloy research and development and application have a great relationship with the failure to solve the corrosion problem. The latest round of research, development and application of magnesium alloy started in the 1990s. More and more researchers and industrial people engaged in the development and application of magnesium alloy have realized that the key to develop the application of magnesium alloy is to solve the corrosion problem of magnesium alloy. According to the "bucket theory", corrosion resistance is already the shortest of the many properties of magnesium alloys. In order to develop magnesium alloys smoothly and rapidly, the corrosion problem must be solved first. This is the inevitable development of magnesium alloy.
(2) China has very rich and high quality magnesite resources, and we have certain natural advantages in magnesium alloy related application industries. China's magnesium industry should occupy an important place in the world. At present, China's magnesium alloy and its related application industry middle-aged, although compared with foreign developed countries started a little later, but lags behind the international level is not large. Since the beginning of the 21st century, China has joined in the upsurge of magnesium alloy research, and the relative level of scientific research funds invested in China is even much higher than that of foreign countries. For example, China's "863 Program" and "973 Program" have set up special research projects on magnesium alloy. And these special studies are relatively long-term. Therefore, from the perspective of the overall scientific research strategy, China has an important basis to lead the international level in the research, development and application of magnesium alloys. At present, the key lies in how to grasp the main core problems in specific research, and make breakthroughs and solutions in key research. Obviously, the corrosion and protection of magnesium alloy is the core problem.
(3) The key magnesium alloys for expanding the application of magnesium alloys have many excellent properties. This is also the fundamental premise for the wide application of magnesium alloy. However, the application of magnesium alloy in various environments will inevitably produce corrosion problems, because the chemical activity of magnesium determines the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy is not too ideal, and the application effect or life of magnesium alloy may be affected by corrosion in various application environments. This will greatly increase the application cost of magnesium alloy. When the application cost is too high, magnesium alloy applications will lose momentum. It can be said that corrosion is one of the key factors restricting the application of magnesium in various fields. Only by solving the corrosion problem of magnesium alloy well can the resistance to the development of magnesium alloy and its related industries be eliminated and the application of magnesium alloy in the previously impossible field be made
